Also called the cervical spine

About Neck Pain

Our neck, also called the cervical spine, begins at the base of the skull and contains seven small, but powerful vertebrae.

As an incredibly intricate structure, it virtually supports the entire weight of your head, which is generally around 12 pounds.

While the cervical spine can move our neck in virtually every direction, this level of flexibility can make it very susceptible to injury and pain if not stabilized correctly. Because our necks are almost always working, when it goes awry, it’s noticed.

Chiropractic care is designed to help with your neck discomfort and treat the problem behind the pain. Dr. Li sees many patients who suffer from neck issues and knows exactly how to support a safe, reliable, holistic recovery while providing detailed insight into proper, proactive neck and vertebrae protection without the need for prescriptions.

Patients who visit our Seattle chiropractic office for neck pain, commonly complain of one or more of the following:

  • Loss of range of motion
  • Headaches
  • Restless nights with difficulty sleeping
  • Discomfort while working at their desks
  • Discomfort associated with repetitive muscle use (whether sitting at a computer or working in more physical jobs)

Dr. Li knows the importance of correct neck treatment for the body. When any part of the body is treated incorrectly or not at all, the pressure is put in other areas, on other muscles, joints, and ligaments, and that can generate more pain, more discomfort, and more body restrictions. Using a holistic approach, the treatments provided at Mobility Plus Downtown Seattle Chiropractic Care will quickly and efficiently provide relief at the root of the pain.

What causes neck pain?

Activities and events that affect cervical biomechanics (neck pain) include:

  • Poor posture
  • Extended sitting
  • Repetitive muscle use
  • An accident
  • A surgery
  • Sports, athletics, or improper exercise
  • Text neck
  • A blow to the head or a fall
  • Aging and regular wear and tear
  • Everyday lifestyle patterns specific to the patient
  • Your job, work, labor, or profession
  • And, many more

Neck pain can be very bothersome, and it can have a variety of causes.

Spinal manipulation is a safe and effective non-drug spine pain treatment. It reduces pain (decreasing the need for medication in some cases), rapidly advances physical therapy, and requires very few passive forms of treatment, such as bed rest.

At Mobility Plus Downtown Seattle Chiropractic Care, we combine chiropractic manipulation with functional rehabilitation tailored to your needs to get you back to what you LOVE to do.

Here are some of the common neck conditions that we see and treat:

  • Neck tightness
  • Neck stiffness
  • Upper crossed syndrome
  • Anterior head carriage
  • Text neck
  • TMJ dysfunction
  • Neck pain when working at your desk
  • Neck pain when working out
  • Sprain/strain
  • Headaches
  • Whiplash
  • Nerve pain (pins and needles down your neck, shoulder blade, or arms, burning sensations)
  • Limited neck mobility
  • Muscle weakness
  • Herniated disc
  • Stenosis
  • Muscle spasms
  • Neck pain worsened by holding your head in one place for too long (driving or working on computer/laptop)

Depending on your diagnosis, we pride ourselves in building a concise treatment plan for you that targets both the direct and indirect causes of your pain.

Here are some of the solutions that we can provide for you:

Dr. Li’s Treatments for Neck Pain

We offer many techniques and treatments to help support a noninvasive, organic solution to neck pain. Our specialized treatments ensure your neck pain is accurately and effectively cared for, providing the safe results our patients are looking for.

We are constantly improving upon our skills and education to provide the best results possible in the most sustainable manner. Some of our solutions for neck pain are:

Clinical Neurodynamics

Clinical Neurodynamics is both a diagnostic and therapeutic system and can effectively determine and treat neck pain.

Dynamic Neuromuscular Stabilization (DNS)

DNS will help Dr. Li identify motor pattern faults and correct them through specific exercises, this treatment has proved effective for Olympic athletes, as well as weekend warriors and everyone in between. DNS is not used by many chiropractors or rehabilitation facilities, however, Dr. Li specializes in this highly effective treatment program.

McKenzie Institute Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy (MDT)

The McKenzie approach focuses on making an accurate diagnosis of the patient’s complaints and focuses greatly on patient independence in the management of their symptoms. Usually used in physical therapy clinics, Dr. Li is certified and an expert in this targeted technique to fight against neck pain and its cause.

Functional Movement Screen (FMS)

An FMS practitioner focuses on movement patterns that support work, sports, and activities of daily living in a pain-free manner. With the FMS movement screen, Dr. Li can explain the role of mobility, motor control, and functional patterns in fundamental movements to allow for anyone to return to what they love doing, naturally.

Postural Restoration Institute (PRI)

Using this method, we can find asymmetries in the patient’s neurological, respiratory, circulatory, and muscular systems and focus on the weaknesses that may come through as pain during certain movements.

Adjustments to treat neck pain

A neck adjustment, also called spinal manipulation, can greatly influence a reduction in neck pain.  Our Seattle chiropractic office uses this method often to improve the patient’s joint mobility, increasing range of motion and flexibility while reducing any neck spasms.

Exercises to treat neck pain

Exercises and stretches are a beneficial, natural, and effective way to reduce neck discomfort. We continuously educate our patients on the proper way to perform exercises that help to alleviate pain.  We urge our patients to work hand-in-hand with us to best support the ultimate in treatment and pain relief throughout the patient’s recovery.

Getting the Best Help for Your Neck Pain

Determining the best course of action to secure a safe, effective, non-medicated wellness plan for your neck recovery is essential. Neck pain can dangerously affect much more than the patient’s body. It can also seep into everyday activities and lifestyle which will affect mental and emotional wellbeing, too.

Seeking chiropractic help will allow your neck pain to diminish from the root of the problem, as well as teach you the necessary skills to be proactive in your recovery and retrain your body to work for you, not against you.

Our procedure is simple: we will ask you questions about your past medical history and current pains, then we will move forward with an analysis through physical examination. Armed with this information Dr. Li will discuss with you how best to proceed with your wellness plan. He invites open communication and will only provide you with a plan that you feel 100% confident in.

A huge thank you to Dr. Li and his staff. I went to go see them last winter after I injured myself doing HIIT Lab (no offense to HIIT, it was my fault for having bad form after overexerting myself). The pain in my neck was like nothing I had felt before and it made it extremely hard to concentrate at work. On a whim, I walked over to his office on a break to see if he could fit me in after seeing the amazing reviews online. I am so glad I did! Dr. Li was able to provide me immediate relief through some adjustments and by showing me exercises I could do on my own. After that, he was able to teach me more about how I could prevent injuries like that in the future (I needed more core strength and needed to do a better job focusing on my breathing during cardio). He isn't about having people come in just to get adjusted... he works with you to resolve the underlying issues so you can fix for the long-term. I am fully back to doing my normal activities!

Dr. Li is very practical, transparent, and competent at his craft. He was able to review my MRI results and in concert with my neurologist put me on a path to recovery from a bad pinched nerve in my neck.

Dr. Li not only taught me how to save my back (with multi-modal therapy focused on long-term durability, instead of short-term recovery), he and his office we're there for me during one of the most difficult times of my life.  Some days, the only thing I could handle was getting up and heading to my appointment at Mobility Plus, and every single time, I was met with kindness, empathy, encouragement, and effective treatment.  I am grateful for Dr. Li, and Mobility Plus as a whole, and I do not hesitate to recommend them.
